Wink & Lanelle Glover

 

 

IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

 

 

H. Wingfield “Wink” Glover, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi on May 13, 1938. He graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1956 and from Mississippi State University in 1960 with a BA in Political Science.  After marrying Lanelle Luckett in 1960, Wink served 2 years in the United States Army as an Artillery Office.  He entered the University of Mississippi ’s School of Law and graduated in 1964 and is a partner with Glover, Young, Walton & Simmons, PLLC.

 

 

Mr. Glover’s legal related activities include serving as a Special Chancery Judge for Lauderdale County and as a Special Circuit Judge. He was a member of the Mississippi Defense Lawyers’ Association and has served on various committees of the Mississippi State Bar, including Ethics, Continuing Legal Education, Law Office Economics and Group Insurance. He was an officer of the Young Lawyers’ Section and was President of the Lauderdale County Bar in 1972.

 

 

Mr. Glover’s extensive civic activities and many accomplishments include leadership roles in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts where he served as a Scout Pack Master and other various offices for the Choctaw Area Boy Scouts. He was Scout President in 1981 and in 1982 and was recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. 

 

 

Wink was selected as the Outstanding Young Man in Meridian and Lauderdale County in 1971.  He served as a Little League Baseball Coach for 8 years from 1972-1979. He was

United Way
’s Campaign Chairman in 1972 and President of the Board in 1973.  Other community activities include: Past President of the Meridian Rotary Club; President of the Meridian Chamber of Commerce in 1976; member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Economic Council from 1980-1982; President of the Mississippi Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes 1988-1989; President of the Grand Opera House of Mississippi from 1987-1994; member of the Board for Hope Village for Children; and currently is Director of the Mississippi Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  Wink was the recipient of the Individual Arts Patron Award in 1991 from the Meridian Council for the Arts. He is an active member of Central United Methodist Church where he serves as a Sunday school teacher, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of Council of Ministries, and Chairman of the Administrative Board.

 

 

Mrs. Lanelle Glover attended the Mississippi University for Women, University of Mississippi , Austin Peay State University and Mississippi State University (Meridian Campus). She was a teacher at Holly Springs Elementary and Meridian High School .  While at Meridian High, she taught Government, Economics, Law Related Studies and Sociology. She was also the coordinator of Youth Programs and retired after 28 years in Education.

 

 

Lanelle’s civic service and many accomplishments include: Administrative Council Chairperson for Central United Methodist Church; Board member for Lauderdale County’s Habitat for Humanity; Co-Chairwoman for the EMBDC Education Committee; and is currently  volunteering with Parents for Public Schools. Her past appointments and awards include: serving on the Executive Committee of the GLOW Fund in 1970; serving an appointment by Governor William Winter on the advisory Council for the Mississippi Research & Development Center; recipient of the Liberty Bell Award by the Lauderdale County Bar Association in 1987; Star Teacher, Meridian High School in 1995; State Junior Achievement Economics Teacher of the Year in 1996; National “Fellow” Jr. Achievement Award in 1996; Meridian Public Schools Excellence in Teaching Award in 1999; and was a member of the State Board of Education in 2003.

 

 

Mr. and Mrs. Glover have two sons, H.W. “Winky” Glover, III and Greg Glover; a grandson, Hamp Glover; and granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Allysia and Julia.

 

 

This is the first time that a couple has received the United Way Lifetime Achievement Award.
